Off Page Optimization Checklist

What is Off Page Optimization?

In the SEO World, off-page optimization is speaking of factors and elements that have a substantial effect on your site as a whole for the organic or natural search engine results.

These off page SEO factors are just that… elements that are off-site in which you have no control over.

Off page optimization will include link popularity and the PageRank of your site… the better off page SEO you do with your site, the better your site will perform with search engine ranking positions.

Here is MY Off-Page Optimization SEO Checklist

  • Search Engine Submissions – Google, Yahoo, Bing
  • Directory Submissions
  • Press Releases Submissions
  • Article Directory Submissions
  • Social Networking and Bookmarking Sites
  • Submit to RSS feed Directories
  • Sitemap Submissions
  • Video Submissions
  • Use Keywords in anchor text
  • Obtain links from high ranking publisher sites

Search Engine Submissions…

Let’s begin with search engine submission… Some experts may not consider it Off Page SEO, but it is a critical step for the Newbie… if you are a new site to the Web, you will want to let the search engines know you exist.

Getting listed in Google and the other popular search engines is one of the most effective ways of directing free, targeted traffic to your website.

This is NOT a step you must to take as a new site, because the search engines will eventually find you, but submitting to the search engines will help expedite the process.

There are a handful of search engines out there that bring traffic, but the reality is a very large percentage of search engine traffic comes from Google, Yahoo and Bing. There are other search engines like AOL, but they pull their results from these three.

You can submit to all of the major search engines for free, but that won’t guarantee that your site will appear in any searches. Free submission only guarantees that the search engine knows the site exists.

Not to discourage you, but it can take up to 12 weeks for your site to be indexed.

The SEO Benefits of Directory Submissions

There is much hype among search engine users that do not see the importance of submitting to directories. Even though humans don’t use these directories often, the search engines use the Web directories like a referral system because the information has been humanly scrutinized.

After submitting your site to these directories, a human takes over and visits your website. Now your blog or website is under the scrutiny of a human as opposed to a mathematical software algorithm.

When your site has finally been approved by the reviewer, the search engines will now consider your site as validated and attach more value.

You can read more about Directory Submission sites at the following ‘Increase Your Exposure | Submit to Site Directories!’

Press Releases

Press releases are just the facts and benefits for the person reading the press release. You can use a press release to send out new information of all types… this information is usually sent out to publications, news organizations and some forums.

For additional information and a link to 50 press release sites, please visit my article ’10 Link Building Tips – How to Get Authority Backlinks!’, then scroll down to number 6!

Article Directory Submissions

Submitting your articles to article directory submission sites is a great way to gain inbound links that lead back to your site. Each time you write an article and submit it to your blog, you can also submit it to article directory sites.

Writing unique articles is a plus, but not necessary to submit to these article submission sites. Submitting to article sites that are classified as ‘Dofollow’ sites will help you gain precious Google juice from your submissions.

Social Networking and Bookmarking Sites

Social networking and bookmarking sites hold great value for search engine optimization… they are also one of the factors in the Google Panda Update for social approval.

Like most business’ online, you probably have a Facebook account. These social networks are a great way to connect with other like-minded business owners to share ideas, services and product launches.

How many other business’ have you learned a thing or two from by just connecting through the newsfeed or the reading of their profile?

To find out more about these social networking and bookmarking sites, follow the link to the ‘Top 10 Social Networking Sites to Improve Your SEO!’ article.

Submitting to RSS Syndication Directory Sites

An RSS feed directory is a location to where people can seek out content that they can use for their site or they can subscribe to. In order for people to find your site, you can submit your RSS feed to a place that will syndicate your blog content and give you more exposure.

Your RSS feed is usually your full URL with the word “feed” directly after the address. Example, mine would be http://seoblogoptimizer.com/feed/. When you submit your RSS feed to these sites, you will usually need to submit the URL of your RSS feed, plus a category that describes your site. Here is a fantastic listing of RSS feed sites. http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm

Sitemap Submissions

In 2005, Google introduced the XML sitemap format… in 2006 it was adopted by the Yahoo, Bing (MSN at the time), and Ask search-engines. This gave publishers a standard format to follow for creating one sitemap that the top search engines could use.

Now days, blogs are usually very large, so a sitemap is needed to ensure the full crawl capability of your site by the search engine. Creating a sitemap by hand is old school and a tedious task… there is a WordPress plug-in called Google (XML) Sitemaps that will do this automatically for you each time you publish new content.

If you don’t have this sitemap generator, follow the link to my article that takes all the work out of maintaining an up-to-date sitemap. Having this SiteMap Generator Plug-in will ensure that your blog is indexed by Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask incredibly easy.

Video Submissions

Creating a video is fast becoming first page domination on the search engines, if done right of course. Considering that the search engine cannot read the video, on page optimization is still crucial when explaining what the video is all about, and the method for which to be judged by the search engines.

When creating your video, be sure to not worry about creating a Hollywood masterpiece, but just be yourself. It has been said that people relate to videos of others that are just being natural. Create your video, then distribute to various video sites like YouTube and other Social Networking Sites.

Use Keywords in Anchor Text

When leaving comments on blogs and forums, leaving your author bio explaining who you are and what you do on article directory submissions sites, or an inbound link leading back to your site from another person’s site, it is a good idea to leave keyword rich, linkable wording that describes what you are linking to… this is known as anchor text.

To learn more about anchor text and its uses, please follow the link to the article I wrote on the subject ‘Anchor Text + 1 Rule = Increased SEO Rankings!’

Obtain Backlinks from High Authority Sites

When it comes to off page optimization, building inbound links is a way to put your site in the running as an authority site. This is a crucial off page SEO factor that cannot be overlooked for search engine results page placement.

I have written a must read article ‘10 Link Building Tips – How to Get Authority Backlinks!’… this is an article with my 10 link building tips, plus a cool Secret Code that I discovered many years ago that will help you find those high PageRank websites willing to accept comments/feedback, giving you those precious inbound links from sites classified as high authority in the eyes of the search engines.

Closing Comments About Off Page Optimization

Off page SEO is a crucial element that cannot be overlooked… many experts state that off page optimization is responsible for approximately 60% of the ranking factors that the search engines look for with your site.

Take search engine optimization seriously and find yourself in top of the rankings… I may have accomplished this task according to my Alexa Traffic Ranking.

My Alexa Traffic Ranking as of this writing is 87,431 which states that this site is the 87,431 most popular site on the planet out of a few billion sites that are on the Web… of course I have no idea how they rank the sites to come up with these numbers, but this is what it says.

  13. John: Excellent article and resource for those trying to boost their SEO. I had done all of this in years past, but it never hurts to go back to review and refresh. I need to submit more press releases and write more articles *sigh*.

It also helps to participate in discussions on authority sites for your industry. For me, it’s Zillow and Trulia type sites since I am in the real estate industry. I do get traffic from those sites every time I answer a question or post a comment.

Additionally, I am seeing bigger numbers of site visitors from review sites like AngiesList.com and Yelp.com.

    Thanks for posting this.

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Michelle,

Thank You for your kind words.

There is nothing wrong with a refresh for your site… I think we could all use a review and refresh every once in a while.

I fall short of the discussion part and need to take my own medicine and participate more.

It is great that you are seeing greater traffic to your site, that is what it’s all about. I will have to check into AngiesList.com and Yelp.com… I see these sites on TV commercials every once in a while, but haven’t visited to see what they are all about. Thank You for the mention.

I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment… please stop by anytime!
