Links SEO

A quick summary of Links and Their SEO Affect!

If the word “Keyword” is the word that you would hear most often when talking about SEO, then the word link or linking would be the words you’d hear second-most often. Links are the foundation of website communities, and as such they carry as much, if not more weight with search engine crawlers than keywords do.

A web page without links is like an uncharted island. It’s right there in the middle of the ocean, but most people don’t know it’s there. This island could be littered with diamonds, or plants that can heal disease. It doesn’t really matter if no one knows that the island exists!

Can you see where I’m going with this? The same is true with your website… it doesn’t matter how great your website looks, the priceless information that you have, or the services you provide if people can’t find you. Your website without links is as good as the undiscovered island.

Besides the internal links, known as anchor text Links, that connect related articles from page to page, which aid with flat site architecture and help reduce your bounce rate; the first purpose for external links would be to connect your website to other websites with relevant content to yours. In addition, external links provide the method to which traffic to your site is increased… isn’t this a good enough reason to play the SEO game?

Your desire is to increase traffic to your site, which in turn increases your potential for products to sell, the number of sales leads you collect, etc. In short, links can provide increased profit and help your business grow.

There is another reason that links are so important for Search Engine Optimization… there is a type of link that will help increase your sites traffic and SEO, these links are called Backlinks, and are important because they serve as votes for the value of your site.

Closing Comments About Links and SEO

Usually the more inbound links that lead to your site, the more weight a search engine crawler will give the site, which in turn equates to better search engine rankings, especially for search engines such as Google that use a quality ranking factor such as PageRank.

  11. Hi John,

thanks for putting this brief summary together, well explained and easy to understand. I like the analogy with the lonely island. It’s about creating a spider web of links and personal connections.

    Take care

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Oliver,

I’m glad that my articles are easy to understand, because I am just a simple man that sometimes doesn’t understand the information put together by the new generation of the Geek Squad. Because of this, I write my articles accordingly. This may sound like an insult to them, but I actually envy them, I wish I was as brilliant as these Geeks are today! For me learning the technical stuff does not come easy… it sometimes takes me 4 or 5 times to read something to understand it, and sometimes even after 4 or 5 times I still don’t understand the information.

Thank you for your comments… I will continue to write articles that are hopefully easy to follow by non-techie people like me.

    Hey John!

Love the new look man, it’s sharp!

I’d also add buzz on your blog. Google likes traffic coming from new IP addresses. That’s why after a while, the same members keep coming back from a tribe with the same IP addresses. It’s good to have fresh new readers coming back to bump up your rankings.

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the compliments about my site. I’ve been thinking heavily about the Google Buzz button for about a week now… I see that it is on Vicki Berry’s blog, and Vicki Berry is a Social Marketing Genius in my opinion! I’m going to check into it more, but most likely I will add the button!

Thank for stopping by and leaving me comments!

  13. Hi John,

You know I just read a report not to long ago that would seem to back up what you say. It said that Google does not really care about the keywords on the site its the links going to the site that it is more interested in. Keywords are important but now it would seem the links are even more important than that.

Thanks for sharing this great post.

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Tristram,

What you said is very true… for the PageRank-ing (Googles determination of Authority) part of your site, the backlinks play the vital role.

For the people that are not familiar with Search Engine Optimization, let me mention something about the subject of keywords. It is very important to utilize the keywords in the proper locations throughout your articles/site, etc. in order for the search engine crawlers and their notorious algorithm to index your site properly, so when the people that do keyword searches type in a word or phrase relative to your site, hopefully your website will be one of the ones listed in the search engine results page.

      Thank you for your comments!

  14. Stella Rae says:

So how do we get others to post our links if we are just starting out?

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Stella,

Building relationships with others is important for them to want to link to your site, but there are many areas you can get links from. Having links coming in from sites like Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc. directed to articles that you write is important, but getting backlinks from relevant high authority sites are better. You can take a look at this web page, put in the keywords that represent your site, and a list of website will come up that possibly allow promoting of your website. I haven’t used this site, but it might be worth a try! Backlink-Builder

I hope this has helped with your question?

      Thanks for your comments!

      John Engle

      • Stella Rae says:

Thanks for the help! Just wish sometimes someone could share the ins and outs of making it happen from their experience as opposed to only the highlights to what is important.

  15. John,
Great info you shared with us on SEO…the internal linking (beween Silos and posts) are important, but the backlinking is equally important. :-)

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Tracy,

So true, so true… links between sites of similar relevancy is definitely important, and the backlinks that you speak of are even more important in the eyes of search engine crawlers.

      Thank you for your comments,

      John Engle
