Keyword Density – Blog Tips for SEO Page Rank!

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword Density is the measurement of the number of times your keyword appears on the page of your article, versus the number of words on the page… a ratio in other words.

The Proper Use of Keywords in Your Article

Keyword Density is difficult to quantify!  If you had an article with 1000 words of text and your keyword appears on that page 10 times, then your keyword density is 1 percent.  I can’t honestly tell you that there is a secret percentage or ratio.  I will mention that a conservative percentage would be anywhere between 2 and 4 %, not to exceed 7%.

Not Enough Keyword Density, Your Site will Suffer!

Because there is no hard-and-fast rule to dictate keyword density, site owners are soaring on their own.  One thing to know is that if you don’t have enough keyword density, your site ranking will suffer, if you have too much keyword density, your site rankings suffer.

A rule of thumb about keyword density would be to make sure your keyword is in the title tag, the description tag and the h1 tag at minimum.  Make sure you place your keyword or keyword phrase in the beginning and end of your content, and make sure to sprinkle a few variations of your keyword or phrase throughout your content where it looks natural and makes sense.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing!

Search engine crawlers use an algorithm to determine whether the keyword density is reasonable.  You may think that the more times you use a keyword or keyword phrase on your site, the better results you get with the Google Rankings.

You can abuse the system by keyword stuffing, which are too many keywords or a large amount of keyword phrases in your site’s text.  Google will penalize you for this because it represents SPAM!  Be sure to place your most important keyword or keyword phrase throughout the page as recommended above.

The following is where YOU are going to set yourself apart from the competition!

While others are performing On-Page SEO for their sites, I would almost bet that the majority of your competitors do not take the following two strategies into account… YOU Need To!

Keyword Prominence!

This refers to how prominent your keywords are within your web page.  This means how close to the beginning of the page’s Title, Heading tags, or Meta description your keyword or keyword phrase is placed.

If possible, place your most important keyword or keyword phrase at the very beginning of your title, description, h1 and h2 tags, and the first and last sentence in your article.

Keyword Proximity!

Keyword proximity refers to how close two or more keywords are to each other. You will achieve higher rankings if you place your keywords close together.

Example, if you wanted to rank your website for the keyword phrase “free keyword density tool”, you could place it in a sentence like this:

“Visit our site for the Free Keyword Density Tool, you will love it!”

Or you could say “Visit our site for our Keyword Density Tool, you will love using it, and it is free!”

In both of the example sentences, you will receive value from the search engines because your keywords are in the text.  In the first sentence you will receive more value because all 4 of your keywords are directly in line with each other.

A Recommended Tool to Help You with Keyword Density!

Building an online business is a tricky task, and unless you have a competitive edge, you are just surviving, not thriving!

I recently introduced a Search Engine Optimization WordPress Plugin that makes On-Page SEO virtually “Dummy-Proof”!  This SEO WordPress Plugin analyzes your heading tags, it lets you know the keyword density by percentage, plus the content length.  It will also analyze your image and link structure along with your font decorations.  I use this tool, and I highly recommend it… for additional information about this invaluable tool, visit the SEO WordPress Plugin link above.

Your site’s optimization is an important factor which will affect your search engine rankings.  It involves the content and the code of your website, and tells Google and other search engines what your website is all about!  Your keyword density should look natural… you are the only one that can determine how many times you should include keywords in your tags, titles, text links, headings and content, and hope that whatever you choose is the right solution.

Keep in mind, if you focus too much on Keyword Density, you may have a tendency to write content which people may not be interested in reading or linking to.

These strategies will help you reach the success you are striving for because they WORK!  Create a strategy and implement these changes, and they will help you increase your search engine rankings.

Great post! I’ve recently been using SEO Pressor on my blog and I love the results I’m getting. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to keyword density before and in going through some of my older posts, I’m finding that I didn’t have anywhere near enough keywords.

I really appreciate the information and I learned a lot, specifically having the keywords close together and the keyword prominence!

    Thanks so much!

  18. Hi John

    Have to say, Enlightening post.

I agree there is no singular magic figure to keyword density. Also, I wonder why people do keyword stuffing, when they can always use keyword proximity, synonyms and long tail keywords to their advantage.

Personally, i believe that interesting content fetches more visitors, regardless of the keyword density. In our business, human readers matter more than SEO bots.

    Regards,
    Katherine

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Katherine,

I’m sorry for the late response… I didn’t see that you posted a comment! I don’t know why WordPress doesn’t highlight the latest comments yellow like it does when there is someone that needs to be approved because they haven’t commented on my blog before.

There are many people out there that don’t even know about long tail keywords and how they target your site greater than the broad words, nor do they know about using similar keywords in their articles, so they take the easy route thinking it will help them. They will just be penalized, those genius’ that create the algorithms know what they are doing to weed out those people that write lessor quality due to trying to impress the search engines through their articles.

If you haven’t read it yet, you should read my latest article about the Google Algorithm… it states that a person should write articles for the readers, not the search engines… writing the article for the reader with a little SEO implemented doesn’t hurt, as long as the reader takes priority. You hit the nail on the head with your comment!

Thanks again Katherine… always nice to hear from you!

      John Engle

  19. Hi John,

thanks for shedding some light on an important and for being humble enough to admit that nobody knows the exact ratio. Your rule of thumb is very helpful.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Take care

    Oliver

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Oliver,

I’m guessing even if there is a magic number, that may help us get that much closer to higher rankings, but I still believe that the way the algorithms are written, there would still be many other variables that would increase or decrease our rankings.

      Thank you for your comment.

  22. Nat says:

    Hey John

This is a great breakdown of keyword density, I think it is something that is often overlooked as people are generally more worried about picking the ‘right’ keyword!

Question…. What happens when you use ALOT of video for your posts or vlogging like I do? Any suggestions there?
    cheers
    Nat

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Nat,

Thank you for your nice comment!

To answer your question about video (vlogging). My SEO background has consisted of static and dynamic websites without the video, so my strong suit isn’t video, but I will do my best to answer the question for you. Considering that video (vlogging) seems to be the wave of the future, I better get on board!

I have learned that video increases search engine results giving higher rankings to the site. In 2007 Google made a decision to implement video into its search offering. Since this time, websites featuring video have gained a massive advantage. When a company integrates relevant videos that happen to match the content of its website, search engines find and index the video within the site’s context. This happens to improve the website’s video search ranking as it relates to the business’ keywords, and it also allows search results to be presented with matching videos, making them more appealing, thereby increasing search-based traffic.

I hope this answered your question… it’s amazing how the algorithms determine relevant video to content on the site… we can thank those brainiac’s behind the algorithm code!

      Thank you again Nat,

      John Engle

  24. Hello John,
Wow your article has really opened my eyes to SEO and SEO Density! I have installed the All in One SEO Pack on my site. I am not sure if that is the same as you talk about here. More research on my part regarding SEO is in order and I thank you for making it so clear as to the importance of it all.

Great value here John and I look forward to spending more time learing from you!

    All the best,
    Richard

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Richard,

I’m sorry for the late response… I found your comment in my spam folder, shame on that plug-in, I put it in a 1/2 hour time-out!

The All In One SEO Pack is absolutely awesome for creating your customized title, description, keywords and much more, but the SEO Plug-in I am referring to does On-Page Search Engine Optimization… there is a video on my page that will show you what it’s abilities are… here’s the link to the review page that I did: http://seoblogtips.com/seopressor-wordpress-plugin/!

I’m glad my article gave value to you… that’s what it’s all about! Let me know if there is anything further I can do to help!

      Thank You Richard for commenting!

  25. Aaron says:

    Hey John,

This is some great info! I am just beginning to learn SEO and I was wondering if it will hurt your rankings if your articles range from 300 words to over 1000 words. Is everything ok as long as the keyword density is between 2-10%?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Aaron,

      Thank you for your comment!

With me attempting to keep up with Google’s ever changing algorithms, as I understand it, Google is looking for between 400-900 words for an article which shows substance! I attempt to do this, but don’t always hit the mark, my articles are sometimes around 1300 or more words!

Showing the density to be around a conservative 2% all the way up to 10% is a good practice as long as your writing appears naturally written and not overwritten with Keyword Stuffing… you will be penalized by the search engines for that!

I have another article that might interest you to shed some light on your question… it is at the following address: http://seoblogtips.com/seo-content-writing-tips/. This post gives content writing tips for submitting articles!

      Thank You Aaron,
