Improve Alexa Traffic Ranking

My Method to Improve Alexa Ranking

On January 8th, 2012 SEOBlogOptimizer.com was launched as a re-brand. On that first day, I documented my Alexa Ranking at a number of 21,796,443… as of today, April 11th, 2012 I am sitting on a Traffic Ranking of 93,692 with lower numbers in the future.

I’m going to be honest with you… until a couple of years ago, I did not pay much attention to the Alexa Ranking, and to this day, I don’t have enough background knowledge to sound intelligent on the subject.

I know there are many other ways to improve your Alexa Ranking, so once I take Alexa Ranking-101, I will be able to share more details which will be covered in a future article.

Today’s article is about the routine that I have followed which if feel is responsible for getting me down below the 100k Alexa Traffic Ranking mark.

Let’s Begin…

Increase Your Alexa Ranking with a Routine!

Considering that the Alexa Ranking is based on traffic to your site, I often wonder how much of what I am about to tell you actually contributes to the improvement of my Alexa Ranking. The fact is, it is in my best interest to not change my routine because whatever I am doing is working.

If I were to draw an outline of my routine it would be similar to the article I wrote ‘My 7 Optimizing Steps to Gain Gobbs of FREE Traffic!’

Here is my routine…

1. My first step is to research for a relevant topic that I feel people would enjoy reading about or that can help solve an issue they are having along the lines of search engine optimization for their blog.

I will usually start this process the week before my Wednesday deadline, but have many times waited until the last minute which makes for a stressful publishing.

I treat my upcoming article as if I work for the New York Times which will have a deadline that needs to be met; that millions of people are counting on me to produce results.

I Feel that Consistency is KEY! I am starting to believe that the search engines are seeing the importance of my routine which makes me feel that consistency is extremely important!

The search engines spot the routine which tells them that this site owner takes their information seriously, more than the next guy that just throws up content any time he chooses.

2. Once I figure out what topic I will be writing about, I do my keyword research to see what types of keyword phrases people are searching for on the subject. Providing the proper keyword phrases within my content will increase my chances of targeting those Internet searchers queries, and will hopefully land me in the search engine results pages for searchers to find.

If I’ve done my on page optimizing correct and a person lands on my page, the search engine scripting will do its work to determine, by the pattern of the searcher, whether my information is worth reading.

Example: Google is counting on the human reader element to determine if your content is worthy or not. This is called user experience. With the Panda update, Google is trying to measure the user experience in terms of “Average Time on Site”, “Bounce Rate” and a number of other factors.

3. After my article has been published, I then submit my article to the 7 article directory sites that I have listed, plus ArticleBase.com.

All the above, after the topic has been decided, is the same process that I do for my clients with the ‘Platinum Package’ shown on the Blog Post Optimization Services page, with the exception that I do 4 Blog Post Article Submissions (once a week as mentioned) as opposed to 9 per month that the Platinum package offers.

I also announce my article by submitting to social media networking sites to include groups on Facebook and Linkedin… I also create a Tweet and submit the article to Google+.

With the Google Panda Update, the Super Power Search Engine is looking for Social Approval as one basis to the importance of your site… of course this is just one of 100′s of factors in the algorithm.

4. Last, but not least… I interact with the people that leave comments about my articles. My blog isn’t as popular as many out there, but I am in the infancy stages of this site, and doing pretty well I must say.

Closing Comments About Improving Your Alexa Ranking!

I must be doing something right, because I only post once a week, on the same day and the search engines and all those fancy factors that make up this Alexa Traffic Ranking are apparently seeing it.

There are many people that I have seen post 2 to 6 times a week and their Alexa Ranking to this day, still has not dipped below the 100,000 mark… many of these sites I am referring to are ranging from 500,000 + all the way up to 3 million + for their Alexa Traffic Ranking, and most of these sites are a few years old which is another plus with the search engines… what gives?

I know of a lot of people that follow a similar routine to mine above, so my only thoughts are that the differences could be the On Page Optimizing which happens to be what this blog is all about, and my specialty. There is an art to optimizing and it has taken me many years to get to the point to where I am now.

With the ever changing algorithm, I am always in the learning stages and the only difference between me and the other guy that doesn’t have the SEO background may be that I notice Many areas that can be tweaked to make a BIG difference to the search engines.

Methods that I highly recommend to build authority backlinks is in the article I wrote ’10 Link Building Tips – How to Get Authority Backlinks!’

For those of you Alexa Traffic Ranking experts out there, what is your opinion for my under 100k success in 3 months… what am I doing right? I would love to hear your opinion, because as I have stated, I don’t have a strong background with Alexa.

    Great Guide!
I wish I had stumbled on this when I started blogging. Of late, I have brought my Alexa Rank significantly lower, but it has been back-breaking work – hard work all the way. ;)

  3. Hi,

What are your thoughts about the importance of the Alexa ranking, is it just a vanity metric or does it add value somehow? I also read installing the toolbar tends to improve it too.

    Thanks.

As I mention in my article, I am not an Alexa Traffic Ranking expert by any means, but I do believe that the Alexa Ranking is taken into consideration similar to social approval within the Google Panda algorithm.

From what I understand, it is the people that visit this site that have the Alexa Ranking toolbar that give Kudo’s to my site.

As far as I understand, it doesn’t matter if I have it or not, just those that have it and visit.

I hope I have answered your question.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

        Hi John,

Alexa ranking is meaningless and can be “gamed” as I have shown on this blog post http://www.forestsoftware.co.uk/blog/2011/05/alexa-rankings-how-important-are-they/

Basically it counts visits from people that have the alexa toolbar installed (something that several AV’s pick up as spyware). This is bourne out by Alexa themselves on http://www.alexa.com/help/traffic-learn-more where they say “The traffic data are based on the set of toolbars that use Alexa data, which may not be a representative sample of the global Internet population”).

          Hey John,

There are many opinions floating around the Web about this subject… I have been watching the Alexa Ranking for years not really knowing what it represents. As I mention in my article, I am far from an Alexa Traffic Ranking guru, and to this day, I am not completely sure of its use.

I just know through a WordPress plugin that I use, Jetpack, that my traffic has been steadily increasing almost daily… I contribute this to Consistency and my Optimizing abilities.

No matter what the Alexa Ranking means, whether its true or false, I just have seen a pattern emerge that I wanted to share with my readers that are struggling with their sites.

Although maybe not fully accurate, there has to be some percentage of truth or it wouldn’t exist.

Thank You for stopping by and taking the time to add value to this article with your comment.

In relation to Internet advertising and marketing, the one factor you are going to read about achieving Google 1st page ranking is search engine optimization. Listed here are some of the basic strategies you’ll be able to apply instantly to your document to get started zooming towards greater heights in search outcomes.

  7. Joanna says:

Hi John, great blog! I would like to ask you about the “re-posting” strategy you do for the article you initially post on your blog, later on to the article directories. Did you mean the same article? Cause after Panda Update, article directories submissions have lost a great level of importance as far as the search engines value them.

It is still a traditional marketing free strategy but I think that there is no value in re-posting the same (duplicate) article online especially to the depreciated article directories.

As far as the duplicate articles around the web, they do not get penalized but the search engines know how to find what is the original and first posted article and only give value to this one, ignoring the duplicates that come right after the initial post.

Would love to hear your point of view.

    Have a great Sunday.

    Joanna

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Joanna,

Yes I do mean re-posting the same article… the value isn’t as good as it used to be, but we all strive to get the word out about our site.

Doing this is not considered duplicate content in the form that a site gets penalized for, as if copying somebody else’s work with no information leading back to the original author, the Google Panda Update will frown on that. In this case it is your original content blasted through cyberspace, which according to Google, unless something has changed, will choose what they consider to be the content that holds the most relevancy for the query and put that one in their results pages.

Article Directory Submissions sites are a depository for others to copy and put on their own site, but you will not get much value from doing this according the Google Update, because it is not original, authentic material which the Update is looking out for… but, as long as the person follows the rules of keeping the same information and links for the original author, all will be OK.

Since not all people follow the rules, I submit my content to the Article Directory sites in a way that gets past many of the people that copy and paste my information, yet don’t put the Author Bio information in there and I still get traffic back to my site from them doing that, plus a backlink that doesn’t have much value, but it’s still a little bit.

What is it that you are doing with some of the articles on your site Joanna… are you changing the dates then re-posting an old article. Considering that the search engine’s database has this information on file from when you originally posted the materials, are you finding that it still works, and you are gaining additional traffic from doing this?

Thank You for stopping by and taking the time to comment Joanna!

  8. That’s phenomenal John! I am not Alexa expert but I do know your consistent routine is making a big difference.

I would also add your superb relative content is a key player here. Far too many bloggers are all over the map trying to offer quality content but don’t realize how far they stray from their onsite optimization. They may be offering quality content that just isn’t relevant enough to their site.

You on the other hand stick to the script, (always!) and provide some of the best information I have found online.

    Thanks John!
    Richard

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Richard,

Good point Richard… relevancy is a big deal when it comes to branding your site, plus Google’s whole purpose in life is to connect people to the most relevant pages for the Internet searchers queries. I do make my best attempt to provide quality and relevant content that all stems around SEO.

I appreciate your nice words Richard… it’s people like you that make my efforts all worth it.

  9. Hey John – Thanks for a great article. The biggest takeaway for me, and something I talk to my clients about all the time, is that you were consistent. Consistent in your approach and your posting. Thanks – I am going to share your post on my Facebook Fan Page – http://Facebook.com/DecisiveMinds. :) ) Thanks, Michele

    • John Engle says:

      Hi Michele,

Thank you for your kind words… I do try hard to provide value, and I believe that value and consistency is a big factor in my Alexa Ranking success.

Wow John. This is great article . I do always wander about this alexa ranking.. I have a niche blog with frequent post but the alexa ranking rather stays above 15m mark and on the other hand another blog with only post of once in two weeks but shoot down to below 10m mark. You are right , it is the keyword that can make a blog improve its ranking.

I never left your article unread.

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Edison,

The Alexa Ranking is still a mystery to me… I am going to put it in my future plans to research as much information about this Traffic Ranking as possible, then write a follow up article… with me being an SEO dude, I think I need to know this.
