HTML Header Tags Used to Outline & Highlight your Page’s Content!
HTML header tags can serve as an indicator to the level of importance of each section of your content. These HTML header tags denoted as h1, h2, h3 etc., are an easy way to format your text and organize your page’s structure.
The Search-engine ranking algorithms will also place emphasis on text enclosed with-in the header tags when determining where pages should be ranked for those terms.
Under normal circumstances, your h1 header tag will be the headline of your content, and will ultimately be the most responsible reason for a person to visit an article when on your website or blog. The h2 header tag will be for subjects that are sub-sections of the h1. The h3 for sub-sections of the h2 tag and so on!
Header tags can be used anywhere within the <Body> tag of an HTML document, and the appearance of the resulting formatting can be altered with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
While you are using the header tags to apply significance to your topics, be sure to add your keyword or keyword phrases within these header tags. These HTML tags will not only highlight the important subjects on your page, but you can use them to logically format your content into hierarchical topics as shown below.

The heading hierarchy reads like this:
- h1 tag: (Page Topic Headline) Losing Sleep from Poor Sleeping Habits?
- h2 tag: (Main Topic) Your Mattress Could Keep You Awake
- h3 tag: (Sub Topic) Too Firm?
- h3 tag: (Sub Topic) Too Soft?
- h2 tag: (Main Topic) Choosing the Right Mattress
For WordPress-based sites, you can choose a header tag in your Edit Post box where you place your content to publish for your blog. Navigate to your Dashboard > Posts > choose a post, then in your Edit Post box (Visual tab), you will see the drop-down menu in the upper left corner, marked ‘Format’.
To choose a heading tag, all you need to do is highlight the word that you want to add the tag to, click on the drop-down box and choose which heading format, it’s that easy.
To add the header tags in the ‘HTML’ tab of your Edit Box, you would need to do it manually as shown below.
<h1>Text enclosed within a Header 1 Tag</h1>
or
<h2>Text enclosed within a Header 2 Tag</h2>, etc.

I didnt know they were used in search criteria
These tags help the human and the search engine alike understand a little bit better the importance of certain sections of your content, so it will rank it accordingly.
There is not a substantial boost in ranking, nor are any of the words from the header tags used in the search engine results pages, that is where the Title Tag, along with the Meta Description Tag come into play.
