Google PageRank

Understanding Google PageRank!

Google PageRank is one of those mysteries that may never be completely unraveled. There has been much written about it, but probably the only two people in the world who understand it completely are Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The reason for this is it was their brainchild!

The Google’s PageRank actually started as part of a research project that Larry Page and Sergey Brin were working on at Stanford University. This project involved creating a search engine that would rank pages in a democratic fashion with weights and measures thrown in for accuracy… hence the term.

The interesting part about the PageRank is that although Page and Brin were the brains behind this algorithm, it didn’t belong to them. Stanford University actually owned the patent on the PageRank algorithm until Google purchased the exclusive rights to use the algorithm for 1.8 million shares of the company, which were later sold for $336 million in the year 2005.

As we know it today, the Google PageRank is a method by which web pages are ranked in the Google search results. A combination of factors creates the actual rank of a web page brought to you by the assistance of the Google Algorithm. Google explains it this way:

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the Web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But Google looks at more than that sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.””

In other words, it’s a mystery. A page that has more links (with equal votes) might rank lower than a page that has a single link that leads to a “more important” page. The lesson? Create pages for visitors, not for search engines.

A Tip to Receive Higher Google PageRank!

There are many ways to help you receive higher Google PageRank, but one of the most important factors to be discovered by the Google Algorithm would be for it to notice backlinks from relevant, high authority sites. The more relevant an inbound link from another site pointing to your site is, the higher PageRank you can potentially receive. If you are not already doing it, you need to put an SEO plan in motion that targets relevant content websites.

One more thing to keep in mind… if you have a large amount of inbound links pointing to your site, that aren’t related to your site’s content, it can be detrimental for receiving a higher Google PageRank.

  1. Hi John,

thanks for the info & insight into this all-important element of our websites!
I wanted to endorse your emphasis on backlinks – I took part in a blogging challenge during August, and members of the challenge were promoting one another – and my blog rank improved by almost 200,000 in the Alexa rankings to under 400,000 (Alexa is another form of ranking) – so blogging activity AND links are a potent combination!

    thanks for this!

      Hi Tracey,

Receiving backlinks from others will help your all around score… it seems that the more you build relationships with people, the better you get ranked (from link building of course). Take Katie Freiling and Jonathan Budd… they believe in building strong relationships with people, and their popularity for their genius is a result of it… I believe you know of them, but google their names if you are not familiar with them.

Thank you for your comment and stopping by.

      • Hi John,

Yes, I know them – was part of Unified Tribe for a good while & am still in contact with many wonderful friends from there :) Which leads nicely to what you were saying about relationships : I have built some great online friendships with some lovely people via Unified Tribe, all of whom have so much to share – and we’ve been helping one another – tribes are a huge help!

Look forward to more articles :)
