NoFollow Article Directory Sites and Their Bad RAP!

This article about article directory sites that come with the NoFollow attribute is a little bit shorter than my usual articles, and for very good reason… this is more of a testimonial of my brief stupidity. But, in this short lived Brain-Fart came a valuable lesson that I’d like to share with you.

Last week I had a guy submit a comment on my blog article ’7 DoFollow High PR Article Submission Sites!’… he told me that he thought that one of my sites listed, ArticleBase.com was a ‘NoFollow’ site. Boy, did I feel like an idiot… he was right!

On another note, this nofollow site, ArticleBase.com has close to 10 million views per month according to TrafficEstimate.com, which is higher than the other DoFollow sites I have listed.

Did YOU Know that YOU Can Gain DoFollow BackLinks to Your Site from NoFollow Article Directory Sites… If DONE RIGHT OF COURSE… Keep Reading to Find OUT HOW?

It is nothing new that many of us already know that the ‘DoFollow’ article directory sites are a good thing to build strong, high quality backlinks leading back to your site to assist in the boosting of your site’s PageRank. For a while, I too believed that there was little benefit to submitting my articles to sites that carry the ‘NoFollow’ attribute.

For those that don’t know… anytime you submit an article to an article directory site, you have submitted your writing brilliance to a site that is a public domain for others to copy your content. These article directory website’s are ‘public content depositories’ where webmasters can search for, then select content to place on their own site. CERTAIN RULES APPLY OF COURSE!

Below, I will discuss how to gain DoFollow BackLinks to your site from the NoFollow article directory sites!

Negatives of the NoFollow Article Sites!

If you are not familiar with what it means to be a “nofollow site”… in a nutshell Google will not follow a link that leads back to your site if the ‘nofollow tag/attribute’ is attached to the link.

The nofollow tag was initially created to keep spammers from leaving useless links back to their sites on every possible forum, blog and social network with the hopes of creating better search engine rankings. Google appears to follow the ‘NoFollow’ rule more strictly than the Yahoo and Bing search engines.

Interpretation: No Link Love from Google!

What I Did to Gain the DoFollow BackLinks from the NoFollow Article Directory Sites!

Here is my story of the incredible Inbound Links that I have received from this highly searched and viewed, NoFollow site known as ArticleBase.com.

I placed an article on the ArticleBase.com and within a few days, I received 4 backlinks from sites that copied and placed my article on their site. One of those backlinks was from a High PageRank site known as SiteProNews.com that Featured my article for almost a week on their front page. You can see the article here: Keyword Optimization – How to Optimize for Google Search Results!

Keyword Optimization

The following week I created another article that happen to have the same internal cross-link in it, so in turn I received a total of 10+ backlinks coming back to just this one article.

The only reason I knew that somebody copied my content was due to the trackbacks that are built into the WordPress platform that show up when there is a inbound link leading back to my site from another WordPress site.

These 10+ links are acting like votes for this ONE article stating that the Google Panda Update post is a great article and needs to be ranked accordingly. NOT only that, but the articles that were copied had at least 2 links within them, so I am receiving link juice from the person’s site that copied my article back to each page that the link leads to.

You can check out the 10 trackback links here: Google Panda Update – Get Ranked, NOT Penalized (Scroll down to the beginning of the comments and you will see these backlinks from the people that used my articles)… these are just backlinks for the Google Panda Update article, there are many, many more leading to other pages.

What YOU Need to DO to Gain these DoFollow Inbound Links!

Here is the trick to gaining these backlinks when somebody copies your content from a nofollow directory site. To begin with, you need to know that not all the people that copy materials from article directory sites will follow the rules (they are supposed to copy the ‘Author Bio’ along with the article, but many will not, leaving you without a link(s) back to your site).

Considering that many of the people that don’t follow the rules are lazy, looking for the easy way out, they most likely will not take the time to remove the link that is within the article itself (there are many people that have copied my articles, and when I visit the site where my article is, my Author Bio is not on the page, but my internal link is).

So, in order to gain the best chances for having an inbound link or two back to your site, you will need to make sure you do internal cross-linking within your content, not only is it a good SEO practice for you to do with your own articles, but make sure that this cross-link is within your content when you submit it to the article directory submission sites.

Another SEO Tip for you to gain followers and receive backlinks… one thing I do each time I publish an article to an article directory site, besides having links in the Author Bio area and internal cross-linking, I put a ‘Related Article’ sentence (similar to how I did it at the end of this post) with a link within the content at the end of the article.

If people like your article and you mention that there is a similar one at the following link, they will usually click on it.

Closing Comments About NoFollow Article Directory Sites!

Remember, even though you are wanting to receive a backlink from a DoFollow site, keep in mind what was said above. With the increased popularity of article directory sites, submission sites like ArticleBase should not be passed over because it is not a DoFollow site… remember, this site has close to 10 million readers per month increasing your chances of being noticed.

If you do it right and submit your content to the NoFollow article directory sites that are of high traffic volume, you can still receive inbound backlinks that will be without the ‘NoFollow’ attribute attached once they are copied by somebody for their site.

    Hi John,

Thanks for this article. This is the most positive piece I have read on the nofollow rule for article submission and make me think some SEo giants are missing a trick. The crucial factor is that the article site and therefore the article is getting picked up.

I’m heading over to articlebase and will give your technique a try (I’m not too sure if other article submission sites allow cross-linking but its wortha go).

    Thanks

    • John Engle says:

      Hey there Kopshirts,

I’m glad this article gave you some value… and cross-linking on the article directory sites is allowed if done right… I have done it many times. Some of the sites will not allow cross-linking to another page, on your site, if the link is within the fold of your article, others have said within the first 30 lines, some directory sites have said no more than 4 links total, to include the Author Bio, etc… it is just up to their rules.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

  9. dan says:

    John,
can you explain how can we use the Add New Link function in WordPress?
There are many attributes as Target and Link Relationship. I researched all over the Internet, but didn’t find any of reliable explanations.
So, if I add link from your web site (for example), where will be this link show up in my web site? Would be this link dofollow or nofollow?

Sorry, but I think I have a lot more questions for you :/
    dan

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Dan,

Adding a new link in WordPress is your Blogroll, which you can find under ‘Appearance > Widgets’… it will be marked ‘Links’.

If you click on ‘All Links’ in your Dashboard you will see what links you have there by default. They will usually be for WordPress themes, Documentation (Codex, which is WordPress information), Plug-ins, etc. These links will NOT have the ‘Nofollow’ attribute attached.

You can add any links you choose to a sidebar; WordPress made it easy for you… you can add a link to a website you like, a description for what the link is about, then add a new category if you choose.

If you want the link to open a new browser window when clicked on, tick the ‘_blank’ under ‘Target’… the box marked ‘Link Relationship’ is another way to make the links more human, the best thing to do is read about it using the ‘XFN’ link at the bottom of the box.

After you have saved your link, if you haven’t done so already, go under Widgets and drag and drop the ‘Links’ widget where you want it to be on your site (sidebar, Footer etc.), it’s that easy. After dragging and dropping the widget, it will give you options to add ‘all links’ or the category you just made, etc.

      I hope this helped.

  10. I am a newby in SEO and it didnt take me much time to understand about”no-follow” attribute. As soon as I did, I began to delete article submission sites that were no-follow. Now after I read your post, I feel I made a big mistake. Thanks to you, I realize that regardless of what attribute is given, it is alright to submit articles in high page ranking websites.

By the way John, I noticed that your blog itself has “no-follow attribute”…any plans to make it “do-follow” ?? Just joking.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.

    • John Engle says:

      Hey Tracy,

This method seems to be working very well… I just submitted an article to ArticleBase.com and in 2 days I have 9 pingbacks showing that 9 people copied my article from that site to put it on their own site.

2 of these sites didn’t use my Author Bio information that I left with the article, so my backup idea worked as I mentioned in this post to where I had a link within the content that the person did not take the time to remove.

So, in a nutshell I have 9 inbound links showing endorsement for the link I had within the content which was to the article ‘How I Got My Alexa Ranking Below 100K in 3 months!’

You can check it out for yourself to see what I am referring to… go to the article and look right before the comments “Sites That Link to this Post” and you will see all of them… this method works!

I know you were just joking about the Nofollow comment about my blog, but WordPress is doing us all a favor by doing that because each time we approve a comment it is telling Google that we endorse the site that the link goes to, and I don’t feel like monitoring all those comments like the Article Directory sites do.

      I hope I have helped!

Thank You for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment.

      • dan says:

        Hi,
in your article for Nofollow tag I found explanation though I still have a few questions:
        1. In category-template.php I should change

        $rel = ( is_object($wp_rewrite) && $wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() ) ? ‘rel=”category tag”‘ : ‘rel=”category”‘;

        to look like this:

        $rel = ( is_object($wp_rewrite) && $wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() ) ? ‘rel=”category tag nofollow”‘ : ‘rel=”category”‘;

        and

        $rel = ( is_object($wp_rewrite) && $wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() ) ? ‘ rel=”tag”

        to look like this:

        $rel = ( is_object($wp_rewrite) && $wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() ) ? ‘ rel=”tag nofollow”

        Right?

        2. Contact us/About Us/Privacy Information/TOS/Maps – these links on your page should have a nofollow attribute.

How and WHERE can I changed this links to nofollow?
        Thank you million time!

        • John Engle says:

          Hey Dan,

I am not sure what you are wanting to do, but you don’t want to mess with the WordPress Core scripting unless you absolutely have to… if you don’t want certain areas to be followed by the Googlebot while your site is being crawled, then follow the information below. If you are referring to an outbound link within your content, you should have that option while placing this information through a plugin if you don’t want to put it in yourself as mentioned in the article I wrote about the Nofollow Attribute… this plugin is: Ultimate Nofollow

You can control virtually your whole site for search engine indexing and nofollow through a plugin called ‘Robots Meta’… after installing this plugin, go into Setting and you will be able to control the whole site for placing the ‘Nofollow’ attribute or stopping the search engines from indexing certain areas, just read the information carefully before check marking it.

          I hope this has helped.

    • Ericlys says:

Thanks for your question xiieppr. It’s not really a case of being appropriate in certain instances but more so overall balance. You need diversity with your backlinks. NoFollow links don’t pass on link juice but do help to associate your page/site with the relevant anchor text (the keyword pointing to your page/site). So nofollow links can help increase the exposure of your site and importantly open doors to getting more mentions via DoFollow backlinks.

      • John Engle says:

        Thanks for your input Ericlys,

There are so many people stuck on the thought of DoFollow inbound links when balance is good for your site.

as always awesome content John…..I love to read your article and I am able to learn from them…..I really need to start writing and posting on ezine articles

    • John Engle says:

      Hey James,

As usual, thank you for the kind words.

Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to publish an existing article from your blog through Ezine Articles, it will require you to spin it first, either that or submit it to them first, then put it on your site after it has been accepted.

I tried submitting content that was already on my site and it was turned down because is was classified as duplicate content. Ezine seems to be sticklers about the content submitted to be original, no where else on the Web.

Thank You for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
